Why World / Foreign Language Credits Matter ?

  1. College Admissions
    1. Strengthens applications: Most 4-year universities expect or strongly prefer at least 2 years of the same world language.
    2. Shows academic readiness: Language study demonstrates abstract thinking, discipline, and college-level rigor.
    3. Placement advantages: Strong preparation may help students place into higher-level college courses or even waive certain requirements.

      World Language Requirements Across U.S. States

Requirements vary widely, but here’s the national pattern:

  1. State High School Graduation Requirements
    • Many states (including Georgia) do not require world language for graduation.
    • Some states require it for:
      •    College-prep diploma tracks
      •    Merit scholarship eligibility
    • Local districts may add their own requirements.
    • Families should check:
      • State Department of Education graduation rules
      • Local district policies
  2.  College Admission Expectations – Nationwide
    • Most 4-year colleges expect at least 2 years of the same world-language.
    • Selective universities prefer 3–4 years.
    • Some colleges accept American Sign Language (ASL).
    • A few accept computer science as a substitute (not universal).

      Bottom line: Even if your state doesn’t require language for graduation, completing at least 2+ years for world-language keeps college options open.
  3. College Admission Expectations – State of Georgia

    University System of Georgia (USG)
    To be admitted to a University System of Georgia (USG) institution, students must complete the Required High School Curriculum (RHSC).RHSC Core Units (for students graduating 2012+)

    • 4 units of English
    • 4 units of Math
    • 4 units of Science
    • 3 units of Social Science
    • 2 units of the same foreign language, OR
    • 2 units of American Sign Language, OR
    • 2 units of Computer Science

✔ Safest Path
Complete 2 units of the same world language: Tamil 1 & 2, Spanish I & II, French I & II, etc.

Tamil as a World Language / Foreign Language / Native Language in USG

  • Tamil is one of the approved World / Foreign / Native Language to study and claim credits in the state of Georgia.
  • If Tamil appears on the high school transcript as World / Foreign / Native Language credit, USG treats it like any other language.
  • If Tamil is not on the transcript, it cannot satisfy RHSC language requirements—even if the student speaks Tamil fluently. In that case, students must have 2 units of an alternative foreign language (Spanish, French, etc.) or 2 units of American Sign Language or 2 units of Computer Science in the transcript to meet the RHSC language requirements.
  • Even if not on the transcript, students may still list the completed Tamil school coursework on college applications as additional enrichment.
    In addition to above, it is always recommended to check the USG Freshman Admission Requirements for the specific college.


Getting Tamil High School Credit Through Marietta Tamil School (MTS)

✔ Accreditation

All K–12 Tamil programs at MTS are accredited by the Georgia Accrediting Commission (GAC)—a key requirement for earning high school credit.

✔ County Partnerships

Students in Grades 6–12 at MTS are eligible for Tamil World Language credits in:

  • Cobb County
  • Fulton County
  • Cherokee County
    NOTE : Marietta Tamil School(MTS) is working to expand credit recognition to additional counties.

High level Steps to get Tamil language credit for College Admissions

  1. Confirm Tamil Recognition at High School
    Work with:

    • MTS Counselor to get the official Tamil transcript meeting the County requirements
    • County’s public Middle School / High School Counselor to ensure Tamil credits meet district requirements and appear on the student’s official school transcript.
  2. For Georgia Colleges (USG)
    Ensure the transcript shows: 2 units of Tamil as World / Foreign / Native Language.
  3. For Non-Georgia Colleges
    Work with:

    • Applying to the college’s admissions office to confirm Tamil meets their world language expectations.
    • MTS Counselor to get the right documentation to meet the applying college’s expectations.
